For many individuals, auto insurance is one of the biggest bills they pay each month, making it one of the least favored forms of insurance. It's necessary and it's costly, but it's very critical as well.
When you understand what auto insurance protects you from and why it can be costly, with just a little less animosity, you could just look at next month's bill. And our independent insurance consultants are just around the corner, ready to assist if you need any help deciphering it.

If you're liable for an accident and someone else gets injured or causes property damage, auto insurance gives you insurance coverage. This liability coverage can include settlement expenses, court legal defense costs, and the dollar sum of the injured person or property that you are liable for.
Liability is the part of auto insurance that almost every state needs, but it's not the only thing that car insurance covers. As well as adding several other coverage options, you can also shield your own car from physical damage to it.
For either 6 or 12 months at a time, most auto insurance plans are effective. Your prices are locked in for the policy period and can't adjust unless you make a change to your policy. You will obtain new rates, either higher or lower, until your policy is extended, which would be locked in again during your next policy cycle.
If you are going to drive a vehicle on the road, almost every state has a legal obligation to obtain auto insurance. The two states that do not, Virginia and New Hampshire, have legislation that basically makes it compulsory, although it is not legally obligatory.
For example, to be allowed to legally go without auto insurance, Virginia allows you to pay $500 a year, while New Hampshire requires evidence that you have the financial assets to pay for any harm that you might cause, similar to the minimum liability coverage in another state.
Aside from legal requirements, not getting auto insurance may be too expensive. Serious injuries and fatalities happen every day, and if you cause them, you may be liable for hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of injury costs without auto insurance.
Your financial interest in your car can also be covered by car insurance. Many new cars, whether funded or not, cost at least $30,000. If you spend money one time, but your uninsured vehicle gets full, if you want a new car, you're going to have to spend that money again. But if you have auto insurance, you're going to get back much, if not many, of the $30,000.
If you're liable for their injury or collateral loss, the liability component of auto insurance provides money to other people. Additional aspects of auto insurance are available that will cover your own vehicle, your own medical bills, and various other options.
Usually, auto insurance liability is broken down into three limits: body injury per person, bodily injury per accident, and damage to property. For example, the liability caps you buy, $100,000/$300,000/$50,000, meaning that the insurance provider can cover for injury or damage to property you cause, but only up to the cap. So, if you choose such liability caps, the insurance provider would only cover a maximum of $300,000 in just one accident.
This protects your own car if it is damaged by a collision, such as a telephone pole or a house, with another vehicle or solid object. If you are in an accident with another vehicle and it's the fault of the other person, then the damage should be covered by their insurance. But you would need crash coverage to pay for the damage to your own vehicle if you cause an accident or if you reside in a no-fault auto insurance state.
Also known as Other Than Crash, for almost any other form of damage it may receive, this protects your own car. Includes damage such as theft, fire, hail damage, dropping objects, damage to the windshield, and almost everything that is not worn and tear.
Uninsured/ Underinsured Motorist:
Some states actually need this, also known as UM/UIM coverage. If the at-fault party either has no insurance, or their limits are not high enough to adequately cover the injury costs, it is intended to cover your own accidents and property harm.
When you sustain an injury in an accident, this is compensation that is paid out to you and everyone in your car. Hospital payments are no-fault insurance, meaning it doesn't matter who caused the crash or what happened: you are liable for medical payments if you were injured in your vehicle. It is also used to offset a premium for someone before their health insurance kicks in.
Rental Car Costs:
If an insured accident requires your vehicle to be repaired in the garage, then this coverage will pay for you to rent a car. It's usually limited to both a daily sum and a lifetime amount, with a maximum payout of $900, for example, $30/day.
If you get stuck on the road, the insurance company will also have a contract with a roadside assistance company, that will come out and support you. Most expenses are covered for free, but there are slightly different requirements for and company.
This is different from roadside assistance because towing costs can only be refunded to you. It will not provide you with the towing service or a phone number to call, it will actually pay you for the costs it costs.
The insurance provider will pay you its present market value if you have a claim on your own car. Since vehicles are depreciating so rapidly, their actual market value may be much smaller than what you already owe. The discrepancy between what you get for your car and what you actually owe on your loan will be paid for by Distance coverage.
New Car Replacement Cost:
It would pay for an option to GAP coverage to completely upgrade your car with the new model. This suggests that you might potentially get a newer car than what you drive at the moment. Usually, this coverage is only available on brand new vehicles anyway, meaning that you purchased it new and are the first owner.
Types of Car Insurance that you need
The type of auto insurance you're going to need will depend on the type of car you drive and your insurance budget. Your financing company would likely mandate you to buy complete coverage on your car if you finance your vehicle, which ensures you buy both accident and comprehensive coverage.
Since your driving history influences so much of your auto insurance premiums, then the type of car insurance you obtain will also partially depend on your driving record.
For example, in the past three years, if you have had several incidents, you will be deemed a high-risk driver and will pay significantly higher premiums, no matter which forms of coverage you select. But the premiums would be much lower if you have a safe driving record of no incidents or injuries, which means you will be able to afford to add some more coverage options.
In the United States, the average cost of auto insurance is about $1,300 a year, or around $110 a month. That figure, however, is the average cost across the entire nation, meaning that rates in expensive states such as Michigan and California are taken into account, along with rates in cheaper states such as South Dakota and Missouri.
The rates are based on the following:
Type of Vehicle
You'll be asked to list all the drivers who should be on your policy when you buy a new car insurance policy. Usually, this involves someone living in your home.
You would certainly want to include any vehicle that is and can be driven by a title. Car insurance follows the car primarily, not the driver. They are checking to see if the car is covered if you are pulled over by the police, not if the person driving the vehicle is on the policy or not. As for protection, the police just want to see if an active insurance policy protects the car.
You can let someone drive your vehicle and under your policy, they will be covered. Yet insurance providers want you to list as a driver someone who has daily access to your car.
You could risk getting your claim rejected by the insurance provider if you deliberately omit a driver, such as your teenage driver who just got their license because you know your rates are spiking.
More discounts on auto insurance are provided by most insurance providers than any other form of insurance. Slightly different discounts are provided by each company, but some of the more common ones include:
Nearly every insurance provider provides a multi-policy discount, which, when you bundle your auto insurance with a homeowners or renters policy, takes off 10% to 20%.
If you have more than one vehicle on the policy, you would usually earn this discount, which makes it marginally less costly to insure any vehicle in a household than it would be if it were the only vehicle on the policy.
Vehicle Safety Features:
Many new cars, such as passive or active restraints and blind-spot tracking, have advanced safety features. For such discounts, each vehicle that has these is eligible.
Safe Driving Record:
Insurance firms want to minimize risk, and it is a major sign that you are likely to keep your driving record clean by getting a safe driving record. Companies normally look back at the record for between three and five years, so this may be one of the larger discounts available.
Good Student Discount:
It can have a drastic effect on your prices to have teenage or early 20s drivers on your policy. To help offset part of this, if they received at least a B average last semester, your child will receive a good student discount.
Defensive Driving Course:
Everyone is eligible for a protective driving discount, but for people who do not qualify for a safe driving discount, this may be especially appealing. Enroll and complete and earn a discount on an approved online defensive driving course.
Not every insurer does this, but it might save you some money by enrolling in your company's telematics program. Telematics is a service that for a number of months tracks certain aspects of your driving and gives you a discount depending on how you drive.
Usually, there are even more discounts available, such as paying in full for your policy, enrolling in automated payments, quoting well in advance, going paperless, etc. To find out which discounts you qualify for, be sure to speak with an unbiased insurance provider.
When purchasing car insurance online, the key thing to look out for is knowing what each coverage option is and avoiding the temptation to only buy the cheapest insurance available. There is a distinction between having an affordable auto insurance policy at a fair price and actually having the cheapest possible policy.
The cheapest insurance would also mean purchasing only the minimum liability limits of the state and no other forms of coverage. Or if it is costly to have both crash and comprehensive coverage on your policy, you can be tempted to save money elsewhere, such as on your liability coverage.
It can be very dangerous to buy the state minimum liability limits because if you're liable for an accident, it just doesn't protect you for a lot of money.
If you cause an accident and the insurance limits are not high enough to cover the injury of the injured party (or the expense of the lawsuit if there is a death involved), then you will be liable for paying out of your own pocket the remainder of the money. And if you don't have that money, your other properties, including your home, your car, and a portion of your future earnings, might be taken away.
