If your move is coming up soon and you've hired a professional moving company, there are a few things you should do to ensure that everything goes smoothly.

Although the movers will handle the actual movement of furniture and boxes, there are a few things you should be aware of on moving day.

Find a Parking Space For The Moving Truck

On the day of the move, make sure there is a parking spot for the moving truck. If you live in an apartment, make sure you know where the moving truck will be parked before it arrives. If you need to get up early to book some guest rooms or whatever else you need to do, make sure you have a plan in place for the moving truck.

Clear Pathways & Staircases

When the movers arrive, they'll use floor runners to protect your floors and staircases, which will also act as the primary path for furniture to be rolled out to the moving truck. Make sure nothing gets in the way of these stairwells and passageways. Pack anything that isn't already in boxes and prepare it ready to go.

Be Visible On the Actual Day

It's best to be present at your home or apartment on moving day to assist movers with any questions they may have while transporting your belongings. You are not required to teach the movers how to conduct their job, but you must be there on moving day. You could also want to make  a brief walkthrough of your property ahead of time and inform your movers about specific items.

Let's assume you have a really important piece of furniture or something else that means a lot to you. Just let them know ahead of time, and they'll make sure to secure and load it with additional care.

Place Everything You Will Not Take With You In A Separate Area

If there are any objects that you will not be transferring to the new place, set aside a space for them and inform the movers that they will not be moved. If you can't move huge furniture to a specific area, make a notice on the furniture indicating it's not to be moved and inform the movers.

Pack Up and Move Valuables Yourself

Before the movers arrive, the most important thing to do is pack up and maintain track of all of your belongings. It's not that movers will steal your stuff, but items also go misplaced when they're thrown into random boxes at the last minute. The last thing you want to do is point the finger at someone else for stealing or misplacing something costly or irreplaceable that could have been avoided.

Make sure you've gathered all your valuables before the movers arrive, and that you keep a tight eye on them throughout the entire moving procedure.

Disconnect  Electronics and Appliances

Unless your movers have already agreed to do so, it's usually your obligation to disconnect and reconnect any washers and dryers on moving day.
Disconnect your television and all of its components, as well as any stereo equipment and anything else that has to be disconnected.

Quick tip: take a photograph of these components on your phone ahead of time so you know how to connect them at your new location.

Kids and Pets Should be Given Extra Attention

Having your children and pets in the way on moving day will not only cause the movers to take longer, which will cost you more money, but it will also be dangerous for them and the workers. If you have children, engage a babysitter or enlist the help of a family member to take them somewhere else. If you have pets, make sure they're in a dedicated room or taken to a friend's or family member's house.

It's not as simple as hiring a moving company and having everything done for you. Regardless of how professional the moving company is, you will need to take certain steps to ensure that the movers can execute their work effectively.
